For Our Health

“Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done.” —1 Chr. 16:8

Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done.”1 Chr. 16:8

According to a prominent Duke University Medical Center researcher, “If thankfulness were a drug, it would be the world’s best-selling product with [health benefits] for every major organ system.”

The Bible takes the idea of thankfulness to a deeper level. The act of giving thanks causes us to recognize the One who provides our blessings (James 1:17).

David knew that God was responsible for the safe delivery of the ark of the covenant in Jerusalem (1 Chr. 15:26). As a result, he penned a song of gratitude that centered on God instead of the event. The ballad began: “Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done” (16:8). David’s song went on to rejoice in God’s greatness, highlighting God’s salvation, creative power, and mercy (vv. 25–36).

True thankfulness is worshiping the Giver and not the gifts we enjoy. Focusing on the good things in our lives may benefit our bodies, but directing our thanks to God benefits our souls.

If I go straight home, throw a load of laundry in the washer, then run to the grocery store, I can start dinner while the clothes are drying and maybe make it to tonight’s meeting.
My mind whirled with a thousand to-dos. Mom had been in the hospital for almost a week, and I was struggling to juggle everything. Work, church, family, and home responsibilities all demanded attention. As I watched the numbers light up on the bank of elevators on the eighth floor of the hospital, awaiting the doors to open and whisk me on to the next thing, I glanced around. I wondered if it might be quicker to take the stairs.
That’s when I saw the man, crouched against the wall off to my left.

At the 52nd Dove Awards, American Christian rap and hip-hop artist KB won the Rap/Hip Hop Album of the Year award for the album His Glory Alone. When KB received the award, he gave a brief speech, as is custom. He talked about how years before, someone had given him a Christian rap/hip-hop CD. At one point on the CD, the artist presented the gospel. It was then that KB gave his life to Christ because of the gospel presentation he heard on that CD.
