Episode 232 – Jesus is Everything with Lisa Whittle

Eryn Adkins & Vivian Mabuni with Lisa Whittle

[Music]

Lisa: What God wants from us, God wants for us. Because anything that I’ve felt compelled to give up, it is because there has been a blessing on the other end. There’s nothing that we could give up on this earth that is better than… than knowing Christ. There’s nothing. I mean I… I’ve studied the martyrs of the faith. I believe what they’re saying to be true. And we either believe that the prize is heaven or not.

[Music]

As a huge thank you, we have a special surprise for you with our big grand finale coming out this fall. Please stay tuned for that. And now, let’s get into the conversation.

Vivian: We are in for a treat, Eryn, because today…

Eryn: Let’s go.

Vivian: … we have the amazing Lisa Whittle here with us. She is a friend, but probably what’s most important for all of our listeners to know is that Lisa is a best-selling author, a podcaster. Most everyone already knows her. We talked about this before we started recording. But she is really phenomenal as a communicator… what I love about Lisa is that there is such an honesty where she’s not afraid to shoot straight, and I appreciate that because she’s the real deal. What you see is what you get, and there’s this integrity about her that I have long appreciated and admired. Lisa is about focusing primarily on her relationship with the Lord and helping women to be able to see rightly and live rightly, beyond just the being religious. So, it’s really centered on Jesus. So, Jesus is everything, and that is what is just so clear in your life, Lisa. So, we are thrilled to have you. We can’t wait to just dive into our conversation. But I love how you love God, and I love how you love people. Lisa, thank you for being on God Hears Her. It’s so fun to see your face and to get a chance to catch up a little bit.

Eryn: Yes.

Lisa: Thank you, Viv. It’s so good to be here, and that’s really gracious. Honestly, you know I love you. I’m a… I’m a Vivian fan, so this is really fun for me. I just feel like I’m going to be chatting with girlfriends, and that’s the best kind of convos, right?

Vivian: That’s right. So…

Lisa: Yeah.

Vivian: … okay. So, we’re just going to dive in because I think one of the… my favorite questions, and Eryn and I both, we love hearing a little bit of the backstory with our guests of how did you begin your relationship with Jesus? Tell us a little bit of that story, what your relationship with the Lord looks like.

Lisa: Wow. You know, my relationship with Jesus… has been long. I don’t remember my life without Jesus because I was born into a pastor’s family, and so, I’ve known about God my entire life. You know… when you are born into ministry, born into a pastor’s family, you’re born into God. You’re born into knowing about God. Now, of course, that doesn’t make your relationship personal. It doesn’t make your relationship…

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … real. It just makes your relationship knowledgeable, and so that’s what I was at an early age. But I also loved Jesus from the time I was six years old. I said this in one of my books, I think it was I Want God, that I have loved Jesus since I was six, but I’ve also loved me, and this has been the rub of my entire life. And so, I think, I mean, how’s that for jumping in, right? But I… I think that has been sort of my problem my entire life, right? It’s been like, who do I love more, me or Jesus? And… so that’s a little insight into, you know, the… the life and angst of Lisa Whittle. But I fell madly and deeply in love with Jesus when I was six, and it was real. It was real. Like, I remember my salvation experience. I remember sitting in church, I remember wanting Him with my whole heart, I remember all of that. And… so what does my relationship with Jesus looks like? It looks like love. It looks like love, and it looks like me growing into an understanding of what God’s love for me really is. And I think for me, a lot of that came later. I think I always loved the Lord deeply and madly, and the relationship was very tangible and very real. But I didn’t realize until later that it was the greatest love story I would ever know, and there would only be one person to ever walk away, and it would be me. And God’s love for me, even in, like, the recent year of my life, has been one where I have really come into a great understanding of paying attention to how much He loves me and how He loves me, and the intentionality of His love for me. And… so, because of that, it’s just grown deeper, and deeper, and deeper…

Eryn: Wow.

Lisa: … and I love Him more today than I’ve ever loved Him in my entire life.

Eryn: Was there a time in your teen formative years where you started having a faith of your own? Or do you feel like it was at six years old was when you knew?

Lisa: Six is when I absolutely made a salvation decision of my own to come to Christ. But I have a real wild streak. I have a real mind of my own, and that’s been true my whole life. So, when I was a teenager, I had this real sort of rub because I… I didn’t like anything performative, but I lived in a world of performance, spiritual performance. So…

Vivian: Yeah.

Lisa: … I had this real intuitiveness about me, and I could sense like, oh, this is what you do spiritually. This is… this is sort of the… the role that you play. This is what’s expected of me. But I also really love God, and so, a lot of my growing up years was trying to discern what was what. And so, I think, teenage-hood was me being a very normal teenager, and me very much not understanding myself. I’ve looked at this in recent years, I’ve had, like, this story arc of my life, and it’s been basically made up of the body of Christ, and the angst with the body of Christ, and the angst when it… within my own body, and that’s what’s been interesting to me to realize, and Jesus in the center of it all. It’s very confusing when you grow up and you are in ministry, and then, your father is this pastor and he is leading the flock, but also has a major public ministry fall, which is what happened in my life. And so, it’s separating that from who Jesus is, separating my own relationship with the Lord, with my father, and all of those kinds of things. So…

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … this is a whole long, big story. But the reality of what you’re asking here, I think, is, has my relationship with the Lord been complicated? Has it been real? Yes, all of those things. And I think that’s true of a lot of us as believers. I made a real decision at six years old. And then from then, I’ve had to make many moments of decision to choose God over, and over, and over again.

Vivian: Yeah, that’s… it seems very relatable that there… there are those crossroads, where we can have all the head knowledge, and the Lord calls us to a new place of surrender. And in the same way what you just described, Lisa, is just because God is just… we can’t wrap our minds around who He is because He created everything, and we’re so small… so deeply loved, but we will never exhaust learning about Him and experiencing His love. And… and again, I think that sense of the tension of is it going to be, am I going to follow me or am I going to follow the Lord? And how do I… how do I live surrendered? How do I live following the Lord? For you, like, what has helped you to be able to say yes to Jesus…

Eryn: Yeah.

Vivian: … to maintain Jesus over everything as your books and podcasts talk about? When you come to those impasses, how has it been for you to choose Him?

Lisa: Yeah, I… I truly believe it’s a daily choosing… You know, I… I don’t know that many of us wake up in the morning and say, I’m just going to go sin. I’m just going to, you know, go do my own thing. I think it’s… it’s… daily complacency and not choosing God that leads us down a different path. And so, I think… for me, it’s the same as it is for anyone. We all want some, like, magic formula. But what it really has been for me in my life has been daily disciplines of prayer, but not in the way that I think I… I thought of this formulaic way that I need to pray, but just daily conversation with the Lord, which in my latter life has been a lot more about silence than it has been about talking. It’s been a lot more about just openness and availability to be before the Lord and see what He has to say to me rather than what I have to say to Him. Although He certainly wants to know my heart. But… It’s been that, it’s been being in the Word of God, which I cannot do without. You know, people want to know all the time, they ask me all the time, they say, you know, “Lisa, how do I know God’s will for my life?” And I find that when I try to discern it, a lot of times things that I think He’s saying to me sound a whole lot like Lisa’s own voice. So…

Eryn: Yeah, and decipher between.

Lisa: … I find that the Word of God is where it is always true and just doesn’t ever insert my own voice into it. So… it has been the daily disciplines… honestly, that helps me stay the course. I think also putting myself in positions to see God’s transformative work, whether it has been His transformative work in my life or His transformative work in someone else’s life. I… I… One of the reasons why I think a lot of us don’t crave God is because we haven’t put ourself in a position to see miracles. We haven’t put ourselves in a position to watch God change lives…

Vivian: Yeah.

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … Because if you put yourself in a position to watch God radically change lives, you can’t get enough of it…

Eryn: Yeah.

Vivian: Yeah.

Lisa: … You can’t then unknow what you know. You won’t settle for a stale life anymore. And I’ve just been privileged enough to watch God move radically, and I just never could be satisfied not watching Him radically move. Like, I’m like, this is what I want to do with my life, just watch God radically move…

Vivian: Yeah.

Lisa: … I don’t care where that is…

Vivian: Yeah.

Lisa: … as long as I can see God move. But in the beginning, it’s scary, right…?

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … Like, we don’t want to step out. That looks like too much. It looks… You know, we have Satan whispering in our ear, like, you… you are too damaged. You cannot do that. You… it’s not in your capabilities. And maybe to some degree all of that is true. My past does… has hung over me sometimes. Or certainly I’m not ever the most talented person in the room. I’ve gotten used to that. But all of those are fear tactics of Satan.

Vivian: Yup.

Lisa: … because he doesn’t want us to know what we can’t unknow. And then I think, also, the most powerful thing for me, by far, has been getting to know who God is. Because the more I’ve gotten to know who God is, the more I want to know about God, and I’m bored with pretty much everything else.

Vivian: It sounds like you’re describing what fresh faith looks like, and it’s a good thing to kind of think through, like what… Just even my own life, just reflecting, am I just relying on old stories or has the Lord kind of come through in a way that’s undeniably Him in recent times? Or am I just relying on just how He delivered in the past, or how He felt so real in the past, and all… and all of that? I think what I’ve loved in my time knowing you, Lisa, is that you continue to push yourself to be uncomfortable. Like, you’re willing to put yourself in places where you are uncomfortable so that you can be a learner. And even on Instagram, I watch you make some pretty radical choices to be off Instagram or these very intentional decisions to protect your soul and to live as a woman who’s integrated in all your ways. What are some of the… the lessons that have kept your faith fresh, and how have you been able to move into those in recent times?

Lisa: You know, Viv, one of the reasons why sometimes I make some kind of wild-hair decisions like that is because I… I know my own tendency to cave up, honestly. I know my own tendency is to never share anything. The truth is… is I am pretty private…  I’m actually an introvert, and I don’t really want to ever share a thing. So, the only reason that I do that…

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … is Holy Spirit prompting, and because I know that if I… if I don’t do pretty radically what the Lord asks me to do, then I will never do what the Lord asks me to do, and I’ve lived that life…

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … Like I’ve… I… I’ve… I’ve lived Lisa Whittle’s idea of a life. I’ve done what Lisa Whittle wants to do. And so honestly, most of the time, it takes some kind of pretty hardcore decision, maybe that’s just cause it’s my personality, but it takes a pretty hardcore decision that it forces me into a have to follow through with, got to put your money where your mouth is… so that I’ll actually do what I have spoken of. Case in point, one time the Lord nudged me to do a one-year shopping fast, and I remember I thought to myself, you know, I’ll be so humble. I’ll just not mention this to anyone because, like, you know, I… I don’t need to put that out there. Like, I don’t need anyone to think that I’m cool for doing this or whatever. And I will tell you that my intentions were pure. Like, I really in my heart thought I do not need to shout this from the rooftops. This needs to be a me and God thing…

Vivian: Yeah.

Lisa: … But the Lord really spoke to me and said, I… I want you to blog about this. This is back in the blogging days. And he said, I want you to blog about this because you need the accountability. And… and it really was a thing where once I said it on the blog, then I couldn’t be around Charlotte and Target and someone see me…

Vivian: Right.

Lisa: … cause then… Right?

Vivian: Right.

Lisa: … So… so, I think that’s the kind of thing that is important. I’m not suggesting everyone takes my path… They’re probably not as hard-headed as I am. But what I am suggesting is that I think we give ourselves… escape hatches all the time when it comes to our relationship with the Lord…

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … whatever that looks like for us…

Vivian: Yeah.

Lisa: … And yet, we then lament the fact that God is not radically moving in our life in a way that we want, or we’re not progressing in a certain manner or whatever we are, you know, sad about. And I just think we have to get to the point where we say, God, I… I just want You more than anything else. And I am willing to give up whatever. And if you really think about it, like, getting off social media is such low-hanging fruit…

Vivian: Yeah.

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … I mean, we are… are we really giving up anything? No, we are gaining. I don’t know if you’ve ever been off social media for a time. I’m sure both of you women have…

Eryn: Yes.

Vivian: Yeah.

Lisa: … but it is such a blessing. It is that is… you’re not giving up anything.

Eryn: That’s right, you’re gaining, yeah.

Lisa: … You’re not missing anything. You are gaining. And so, I always say this, what God wants from us, God wants for us, because anything that I’ve felt compelled to give up, it is because there has been a blessing on the other end. There’s nothing that we could give up on this earth that is better than… than knowing Christ. There’s nothing. I mean, I… I’ve studied the martyrs of the faith. I… I… I… I believe what they’re saying to be true…

Vivian: Yeah.

Lisa: … And we either believe that the prize is heaven or not. Listen, don’t get me preaching. I just really, truly believe this with all my heart…

Vivian: Yes.

Lisa: … or we’re giving our life to a false cause.

Eryn: Yeah, right.

[Music]

Jade: Hey there. Do you need a fresh reminder that God is good? In the midst of the hurt and conflict in the world, it can be hard to focus on God’s goodness. But author Katie Dietz wrote He’s Still Good to remind us that no matter how broken or wounded we may feel, God’s love for us never changes. You can find a link for that in our show notes. Now, back to the show.

Eryn: Lisa, you said earlier, you know, deciphering between your voice or the Lord, and we’re called God Hears Her, this podcast is God Hears Her. Sometimes we don’t feel like He hears us, and sometimes we don’t feel like we can hear Him, or we can’t tell if it is our voice or if it is Him. Can you share a little bit about that journey, how you’ve learned the voice of God, how you’ve deciphered to get out of your own way in your head, all of those things?

Lisa: Sometimes I don’t know. You know…?

Eryn: Yeah. Right.

Lisa: … Let’s just be real about it. I… I… this is… I laugh… I joke about this because I think it’s true. I… I think authors, we often tell our, like, God spoke to my heart stories because we have so few of them that they stand out. But people read that and they think like, oh, God’s constantly speaking to my favorite author

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … And it’s not true. It’s just like it stands out so much cause the times that He does we hold so precious and dear, right…? I don’t think… in any way it’s not because God is not speaking to us through circumstances or people. I think that we’re just bad receivers and we are, bottom line, busy and distracted. It… the reality is, is that busyness kills relationships more than anything else, and it would never apply more than to our relationship with Christ. Margin is what we need the most…

Vivian: Yeah, yeah.

Lisa: … to be able to hear the voice of God…

Eryn: Yeah. Margin, that’s good.

Lisa: … And we all preach on rest. We all preach about margin. We preach about all of that. But when it comes down to it, when we live our daily lives, we just do not believe in our heart that we have enough time. But the truth is, and we know this true, we prioritize whatever we believe brings us life and happiness. And the Lord has continued, and He started this for me in 2024, but He has continued to put forth to me, Lisa, what do you believe to be true about Me? What do you believe about Me?

Vivian: Yeah.

Lisa: … And most of what happens in our life hinges upon that belief system. Do we believe that God is enough? Do we believe that He brings true joy? Do we believe that our… that our happiness and our contentment and our satisfaction flows from our relationship with Christ? And so I… I think that is what causes us to stuff other things in that then causes this whole ripple effect of not being able to hear from God properly. Okay? So that’s kind of the cycle.

Eryn: Yeah.

Vivian: That’s good.

Eryn: That’s good.

Lisa: How do we then hear from Him? Well, I think we then have to clear the clutter… but I’m just going to tell you, you’re not going to clear the clutter unless you want to…

Eryn: Right.

Lisa: … everything in life is driven by desire. It’s not driven up by need, it’s driven by desire. So, until you want to clear out the clutter, you won’t.

Vivian: That’s right.

Lisa: And I’m just speaking to you very bluntly here, if you want to hear from God, you can, but it’s going to take your decision-making process about how much you really want to hear from God. And I’m going to go back to what I said at… at… at another point in the show, I firmly believe that the way that we hear from God the most is from His Word. I believe that when you are in the Word of God, you can get pretty much what you need to know to make decisions because everything we need we can find in the Word of God for all manner of any decision, whether you want to know about sex, whether you want to know about marriage, whether you want to know about money, whether you want to know about practical matters, because if you’re making a decision about a job, we want to know about should I take this job or should I not? Most of those matters have to do with your character and… and with the decision-making process that is much more about who you are, where you are, versus should I take this specific job or not…

Vivian: That’s right.

Eryn: That’s right.

Lisa: … We want to know the specifics, but I’m just going to tell you that what I know to be true in all of my life, and my life has not been short, I’m over fifty, is that God’s desire for you and His purpose for you is the same whether you’re serving in job A or job B or job Z…

Vivian: That’s right.

Lisa: … And so, that should give you some comfort and hope because that means if you lose your job, or if you move to a different city, or whether you get divorced, or whether you are … lose the church position you’re in, you can still serve… Jesus to your very last breath because your gifting doesn’t go away, and neither does your relationship with Him.

Vivian: Mm. That’s so, so good…

Eryn: That’s good.

Vivian: … I would love to hear a little bit more, Lisa, just with kind of your journey in understanding that piece with how you’ve been able to continue to be formed to be more like Christ.

Lisa: Oh gosh, Viv. I… I will say, I think like anyone listening… while I wish that the easy road had been the most formative, that’s not been the case. It’s been the tough road.

Vivian: Yeah.

Lisa: It’s been the rejections. It’s been the chiseling of the Lord. It’s been the discipline of the Lord. It’s been the grief journey…

Vivian: Yeah.

Lisa: … the loss, the pain, the misunderstanding. It’s been the hard of life, right? But it’s been the most formative. You know, I… my whole life, and I think this is true of people that maybe have my… my personality, but also people that early on maybe have some fractures in trust… via relationships, I learned very early on as a pastor’s daughter that you can’t trust people. And that… that might sound harsh, but when you are a pastor’s daughter and you just are… you’re an intuitive person and you hear a lot of things, and you have people who love your dad, but also people that don’t love your dad, and you’re torn and all this kind of stuff, you just pick up on stuff, right?

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … And so, I formed just a… a lack of trust, I think, for people generally. And then you add to that a restless father who moved us around the country. I… I lived in ten different …states by the time I was a teenager. And so…

Eryn: Wow.

Vivian: Wow.

Lisa: … I think, when you don’t attach to people, then, because you know that you have to love them and leave them…

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … that also just creates sort of this personality thing where you… you just don’t form those kinds of trust attachments to folks cause it just is better for your heart.

Vivian: True.

Lisa: I’m a… I’m a… I’m a person who loves deeply…

Vivian: Yeah.

Lisa: … and so, I don’t want to get close to people in that way or… I… I haven’t wanted that in the past cause I haven’t wanted to… to break my own heart. So, you know, for me, Jesus… I think I loved Jesus and fell in love with Jesus so much because He has been the constant in my life and the one that I could trust. Learning to… to love and trust church people…Christians especially, has been a longer road for me. But it’s been a formative road, and it’s been an important road because you can’t love yourself, you can’t love your own body, if you are in fracture with the body of Christ…

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … And I think for a long time I kind of deceived myself and thought that was possible. I thought I could live as a lone ranger. I used to call myself the lone ranger. “Well, I… I’m just a lone ranger. I just do things myself. I’m independent. I like being independent…”

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … And Satan really used that against me, you know? And so, I think my formation, as you frame it, the formation of… of being formed… and… learning to… being sanctified, being…

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … you know, all of those things that we call just, you know, becoming holy, learning to become more like Christ, has involved relationship for me…

Vivian: Yeah, yeah.

Lisa: … hard relationship, difficult, broken relationship, but learning about how relationship affected me and how I pushed it away and how much I needed other people but didn’t want to ever need anyone…

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … And so, I think at this point in my life I’ve… I’ve realized how much God was using others to actually love me and change me. And even when my father died, I remember he died in 2017. Oh, and I wrote this blog post and it was like an epiphany. And for this young… this little girl who her whole life thought that the church didn’t love my father so they didn’t love me even though it was like a crazy thing, thinking, right? Because my father was so adored by so many people that were his people in his congregation. But then he had a public fall, and it was like everyone… He was a pariah, right? So, I remember writing this blog post when he died in 2017 and it was… the title of it was “They Loved Me All Along.” And it was like… because the body of Christ came out in such a strong way to send me cards, and write me texts, and tell me what my father had meant, and so…

Vivian: Wow.

Lisa: … I think God then began a work in me in 2017 to show me how my spiritual formation had been through the… the hurts and the healing of the body of Christ.

Eryn: That’s so beautiful.

Vivian: Wow. Thank you for sharing that. I would love to hear just… any advice that you would share with women struggling to love God right now. You know, you talked about there’s times when we are in a time of a journey of darkness. It’s the hard time. You know, we haven’t gotten to the other side where we’ve learned things. We’re just in the dark time. What advice would you give to them, the woman that is struggling to love God?

Lisa: Well, I think I would first say that there’s grace for that. God has grace for that. I often think about Job 23, which is… was a really profound passage that I studied when I was writing the book God Knows. Job says something after he has gone through, as we know, so much tragedy and loss and at this point he’s still not heard from God. And he says, “I go east…” I’m paraphrasing here, but the… but the… the verse is talking about in the first part of Job 23, “I go east, I go west, I go north, I go south. I can’t find God. I can’t see Him.” And he’s basically saying, everywhere I look, all points of the compass, all measurable points that I’m looking and I’m seeking God, I cannot find Him anywhere. And then it’s interesting because there was the word but, and he says, “But He knows where I’m going.” And that, to me, has continued to resonate so deeply. And what the Lord showed me about that was how many times in my own life I have been looking for God, I have been wanting to see tangible proof that He saw me, that He knew me…

Vivian: Right.

Lisa: … that He was aware of whatever injustice was happening in my life, or in the world for that matter…

Vivian: Yeah.

Lisa: And what hit me about that passage was I don’t need to know where God is because He knows exactly where I am. And as a human being…

Eryn: That’s good.

Lisa: … if I knew where God was, then what am I going to do in my humanness? I’m going to do what Lisa Whittle is capable of in her strength, which by the way isn’t much, right? Even if I’m a bodybuilder, even if I am, like, the strongest…

Vivian: Yeah.

Lisa: … woman on earth, it’s… it’s okay strength. I think I’m pretty strong. I think I’m pretty capable, but it’s like I run out. I got a limit.

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: But God knowing where I am, now that’s… that’s next level. That’s endless supply. And so, the… the comfort in that has… It’s been the gift that keeps on giving, and so I guess I want someone to know, like, if you’re struggling to love God, I get it. Like, I’ve struggled to love God sometimes. I’ve struggled to find God, and a lot of our… The correlation between us loving God is us feeling like He doesn’t love us, or He doesn’t know us, or He doesn’t see us, or He’s not quick to respond. That’s why we are struggling to love Him, is because we feel like in some way He’s not moving on our behalf…

Eryn: Yeah.

Lisa: … But I just want you to know that even if you can’t find Him, see Him, feel Him, He knows exactly where you are, and that… He’s never running out of knowledge or… or love for you…

Eryn: Yeah.

Vivian: Yeah.

Lisa: … So, if you can’t love Him right now, it’s okay because He loves you, and I’m going to pray that you find your way back to loving Him.

Vivian: I love that.

Eryn: Lisa, would you close us in prayer and pray that prayer over the person right now?

Lisa: Father, I thank you so much for these moments together. I know that every moment is ordained by You. I thank You that You know our very breath, You know our very thought process. You know every single person that is listening right now, and I just thank You because nobody else can do that… I pray, God, that…, that every word that’s been spoken here, that… it would fall exactly the way that You want it to fall. I pray for the woman or the person listening that if they right now just are struggling with their feelings towards You, whether it be they’re angry at You, they don’t feel loving towards You, [Music] they don’t understand. I pray that they would just, in this moment, turn to You and express those feelings because You’re not afraid of any of our questions or any of our expressions, but that they would bring those to You as a good Father who has open arms all the time, and that they would bring it to You quickly and openly, and that You would show them that You are there and You are present and that You love them no matter what. Father, I just thank You that you do hear us, that You do love us, and that You will always be with us until the very end. It’s in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Eryn: Amen. Thanks Lisa.

Vivian: Amen. Thank you so much, Lisa.
